Wearing a 65B "St-Rollex" shed plate 60031 "Golden Plover" rests in steam inside Dundee Running-Shed.By this time this classic loco had weeks left to live and was scrapped before the end on the year..14 august 1965..

Standing with 44702,45162 from a batch built by "Armstrong-Whitworth" in 1935 sits on Dalry Road depot (64C) in Edinburgh.This shed served the Waverley route mainly and was on the main-line out of "Princes-Street" Station now long closed as is this depot and also the Waverley route..16 august 1965..

Gresley's Masterpiece,the V2 2-6-2...Here is a study of 60824 standing on St-Margerets(64A) in Edinburgh caught in a rare flash of sunshine. This particular V2 was one of those modified with 3 seperate cylinder-blocks after the original "monoblock" wore out.The fact this engine has steam-pipes feeding the 2 outside cylinders similar to the A3 pacifics gives this away..16 august 1965..

Eeking out the final few months before inevitable withdrawal and scrapping,60151 "Midlothian" stands ready for more duty round the rear of St-Margerets(64A) in Edinburgh.Note the utter filth in these old sheds towards the end of steam.Piles of brake-shoes,ash,and pieces of metal etc-etc dumped all over the place!..16 august 1965..

One of the few Class-B1 LNER "namers" 61245 was "Murray of Elibank".Seen here at Dalry-Road(64C) in the suburbs of Edinburgh.Connecting-rods recently dis-assembled but still with shiny journals.As it was withdrawn the previous month that was the end for this machine ..16 august 1965..

L&SWR Adams Class 02 tanks were used on the Isle of Wight Rly right up to the end of steam and conversion to a 3rd rail electric system.here we see No-33 "Bembridge" with No-30 "Shorwell" behind it on shed at the main depot at Ryde-St Johns.Steam still had 2 years to go when this photo was taken..Spring 1965..

"Peregrine" 60146 a Peppercorn A1 Pacific,it's main-line career over stands dumped in the scrap lines at York still adorned with the works-plates and smokebox numberplate..August 1965..

"Saint Mungo" 60145 was the final Peppercorn A1 in service.Here it is seen moving around the yard of York MPD.Hard to believe this was scrapped(Barely 16 years old!) just 10 months later and sold for about £3000 scrap-value. The new one 60163 cost about 1000 times as much admittedly over 40 years later..August 1965..

Fairburn 2-6-4 42690 seen stored at Eastfield Shed in Glasgow.Laid aside with all its valve-gear carefully greased in case a return to service was required.Almost certainly this never happened and another perfectly serviceable piece of machinary goes to waste..August 1965..

With all the fuss lately about the new "A1" Pacific 60163 thought this old shot taken in Edinburgh St-Margarets Depot might be of interest...60151 "Midlothian" stands ready to depart "off shed" to head a working south.By this time only a few A1's remained.All of coarse were cut up for scrap--hence the 60163 re-incarnation..August 1965..

Empty Stock duties in Glasgow-Central at this time was performed by Standard Class 4 2-6-4 Tank Locomotives.Here is seen 80121 removing a rake from the Terminus.Note first coach behind loco is a Stanier LMS design..August 1965..

Hammering through Eastleigh with a non-stop Bournemouth Express is a rebuilt Bullied WC/BB Pacific.Looking fairly unkempt with both its name and numberplates missing,either removed for safekeeping or stolen in the dead of the night..Spring 1966..

"Grange" class 6870 stands in Westbury taking refreshment from the Water-Crane there prior to working a stopping train to Weymouth.Loco had weeks left in service before going for scrap..August 1965..

Unidentified Rebuilt Bullied Light-Pacific sweeps through Eastleigh on the down fast with an express probably for Bournemouth.Waiting for the express to pass is a standard class-4 on a stopping train.Electrification by 3rd-rail was only a few months away,note the insulaters already fitted to take the 3rd(power) rail..Spring 1966..

Britannia Pacific 70004 "William Shakespeare" is viewed on the Salisbury MPD turntable.Note engine vacuum-pipe is connected up for loco to self-power the turntable.Engine was at Salisbury in connection with a railtour also involving 60532..14 August 1966..

One of the few GWR classes not represented in preservation are the "Granges" Here we see one of the last ones still in service eeking out its final few weeks before the chop.6870 stands in Westbury shorn of all its number and nameplates ready to head a stopping train to Weymouth.View is looking south from the station past the now long demolished signal-box and many gwr type signals..August 1965..

When I was 16 and just before starting work for "Post Office Telephones"as BT was known then did a week long trip to Scotland,On the way home stopped off in York to visit the original Museum.I then continued my journey home,leaving York behind D9003.This shot was taken from the window directly behind the loco just as the train was pulling away from York Station.Class B1 61029 by then shorn of its nameplates heads south after coming off the avoiding lines around the station with a fitted freight..August 1965..

Can it really be 42 years since I took this picture with my "Halina 35x"!!!!! 34021 stands in Weymouth mpd in full steam awaiting its next duty.By now work for these loco's was getting quite rare and the end was not too far away..July 1967..

About 1/2 a miles towards Southampton after Salisbury tunnel junction was a small goods yard at a place known as Milford.Here we see Ivatt tank 41320 resting in this yard after the morning shunt..Spring 1965..

Standard class 2-6-4 tank 80152 stands in Warminster station after a spot of shunting there,before heading back to Salisbury.This was the last steam engine I ever saw in Warminster actually working before the official end of steam on BR..04 july 1966..

Un-named Grange 6846 stands in steam round the back of Barrow-Road Depot in Bristol.Western loco's ended up allocated here after the closure of St Phillips Marsh Shed(WR) that year..Spring 1965..

60532 stands in Salisbury taking water during the LCGB railtour.Just imagine all those people on the track now during a railtour! Health and Safety would have a wobbly!..14 august 1966..

7029"Clun Castle" stands in Bristol Temple-Meads ready to depart for Gloucester on the next leg of this"Farewell to steam" on the WR special ..1965..

During August 1965 just before starting work I spent a week in Scotland riding around behind as much steam as possible.One such journey was from Aberdeen to Glasgow on one of the famous 3 hours expresses powered by these locomotives.Spent the whole of the journey"window hanging" from the front window next to the tender..August 1965..

Austerity 2-8-0 90709 rests at York MPD.Behind it you can see lines of withdrawn ex-Lner types,including V2's and A1 pacifics..August 1965..

As Swindon works had virtually finished overhauling WR steam in late 1964 locomotives from the LMR were to be seen there getting full overhauls.Why? beggers belief as steam was being withdrawn at the rate of hundreds per month by this time.One lucky loco was stanier 2-6-0 42954 seen here at Warminster after being used as a banker for a southern region bound loco coal train.This was a total surprise as steam was virtually extinct at Westbury by this time.. Apparantly it had just arrived in Westbury on a short goods from Swindon,obviously a running in turn and was purlioned to do this banking job..Loco only lasted 17 months as it was then withdrawn and scrapped? ..17 november 1965..

Suprisingly still complete with its nameplates 34013 "Ilfracombe" sits in Salisbury running shed ready for its next duty..14 august 1966..

Quite an historic photo this.It shows 4079 "Pendennis Castle" abandoned after her failure approaching Westbury on the famous farewell to the Castle-class Tour.She lost her firebars and all the fire somewhere near Patney but still managed to get to Westbury.Loco never worked for BR again.Eventually preservation and Australia happened..Now back in UK at Didcot..After Flying Scotsman possibly most famous uk loco.Pictured dumped down the side of Westbury MPD..1964..

4630 pannier tank parked at the rear of Bristol Barrow road shed in 1965...On next visit a week later was gone so was probably repaired.
