A Quick look over the Wall at Whatley Quarry.
Resident 08652 at Whatley-Quarry seen bringing the fully loaded "6M20" out from the loaders and into the departure sidings ready for the run up to St-Pancras. Note the wasp-stripes on all forward flat surfaces and addition of large oval buffers to combat the possibility of "buffer locking"..20 march 2009.. 1240x827 08652whatley6m2020_03_09.JPG |
Within less than 24hrs after being removed from store at Toton 60011 had found its way to Whatley Quarry, still in "Mainline" livery and unblemished by a big yellow sticker this loco was due to work "6M20" to St-Pancras.Weather here today was incredibly dull, this shot was a 80th/sec at f4.5 400asa!..18 february 2009.. 1230x820 tug11whatley180209.JPG |
In the current situation with 60's being down to 15 examples in traffic, was not expecting to see another one at Whatley Quarry(At least not for a while!).But no! 60049 seen having just restarted .In the process creating interesting sunbeam patterns in the air above it.Later that afternoon worked an MOD train "6A07" from Warminster to Didcot. ..16 february 2009.. 1230x820 60049whatley160209.JPG |
Sitting pretty much abandoned today is 08652,viewed "Over the Wall" at Whatley Quarry.Place appeared deserted due to the snow, quarry work probably suspended because of H&S issues. No stone trains scheduled today either! ..03 february 2009.. 1230x820 08652whatley030209.JPG |
"Over the Wall" still standing in the Yard at Whatley Quarry in company with various class 59's is "Hanson 120" the bo-bo GM switcher that was badly damaged in the runaway accident on 6th october 2008.Since exhaust and severely damaged cab area seem well protected from water damage expectations must be high that a repair will eventually be made..05 january 2009.. 1240x793 Hanson120whatleyq05012009.jpg |
Close up of the damaged "Cab" end of Hanson Shunter 120 seen in the yard at Whatley Quarry.Plenty of work required here to sort that lot out!..05 january 2009.. 1250x833 hanson120damagecausedbywagons050109.JPG |
Now finding regular and heavy work at the Hanson-Quarry Whatley since the demise of their more powerful bo-bo GM Loco is good old 08 class no 08652 at rest seen "over the wall" ..10 december 2008.. 1250x833 08652whatley10122008.jpg |
The view from the bridge straddling the sidings at Whatley Quarry.Quite a busy scene.60017 (probably pencilled in for St-Pancras Job) and lots of activity in the wagon repair shop area..14 november 2008.. 3440x2496 60017whatleysidings14112008.jpg |
08652 erupts as it drags a rake of 20 bogie hoppers towards the loaders at Whatley Quarry. The 08's here are now having to really work for living since the demise of the GM bo-bo"120" seriously damaged recently in the "Bedlam-Tunnel" derailment. This particular example(08652) was withdrawn way back in 1992 by BR.has been gamefully employed as an industrial ever since. ..14 november 2008.. 3888x2592 08652whatley14112008.jpg |
Never quite know what to expect when you look"Over the Wall" in the mornings at Whatley Quarry.Today on view were 60017 and "Ice-Cream-Van number-1" 59001.(Bell still looking quite shiny!)..11 november 2008.. 3888x2592 6001759001whatley11112008.jpg |
Mainstay of the current EWS fleet are 66's and what is left of the operational engines from class-60....Here we see "Over the Wall" at Whatley Quarry 66084/60087 both waiting for their next workings, certainly in the next couple of hours..31 october 2008.. 3570x2217 6008766084whatley31102008.jpg |
One last look at "Hanson 120" The GM Bo-Bo switcher. You can get an idea of just how massive the american loading gauge is in this comparison with 59203.Bodywork was severely damaged when during the "Run-away" on 29 august 2008 this loco was rammed through the tunnel at the entrance to the quarry by a rake of apparantly brakeless loaded stone-boxes..10 october 2008.. 2231x1711 Hanson12059203whatletQ29082008.jpg |
60009 stands idling away just prior to taking "6M20" out of the Quarry.Whatley's resident GM Bo-Bo 120 is seen passing during shunt operations here..03 october 2008..Footnote-----3 days after this shot was taken"06 october 2008" the GM shunter 120 was involved in a major derailment involving 59101,both loco's suffered damage,The GM-Shunter more severely and is probably a write-off!------- Errr actually no it was not!.Repairs were sanctioned andcarried out at Eastleigh.Returned to site on 8th may 2009 and now happily back at work looking better than ever! 3888x2592 60009hanson120whatley03102008.jpg |
Looking "Over the wall" we see 60056 still in stickered-original-livery idling-away just prior to hauling "6M20" from here (Whatley-Quarry) to St-Pancras.Note the old "internal-user" 4W-ballast hoppers looking quite decrepid in the adjacent siding..01 september 2008. 3800x2514 60056Whatley6m20010908.jpg |
GM Shunter "Hanson 120" propels a fully loaded set of Boxes away from the loaders and into the departure sidings.Location is of coarse Whatley-Quarry.Note the stripes on the stone in the wagon, this is from the water-jets designed to try and keep the load dampened down to prevent too much dust!..29 august 2008.. 3888x2592 hanson120whatley29082008.jpg |
You don't realise the size and how "out of gauge" the GM shunter "120" is until you see it alongside a UK gauge Loco.Seen next to 59203.Both loco's were actually moving at the time of this shot! Whatley quarry can be quite a busy little backwater..29 august 2008.. 3091x2409 59203hanson44whatley29082008.jpg |
Red 60094 "Rugby Flyer" stands parked on the Concrete-Pad at Whatley Quarry,next working unknown..01 august 2008.. 3888x2592 60094whatleyQ01082008.jpg |

Written off by EWS and sold on as scrap,Original BR-Blue 08947 now works at Whatley-Quarry happily shunting around the complex there. All that was wrong with it was a broken wheel spring and flat batteries. Not a difficult fix was it?..17 march 2008.. 3724x2304 08947Howiewhatley170308.jpg |
60065 "Jaguar" stands on the pad along with Hanson No-4 at Whatley..17 march 2008.. 1230x820 hansonno460065whatley170308.jpg |
Whatley Quarry has a GM shunter for movement of hoppers from the loaders to the departure sidings. These are bisected by a main road and occasionally there is an opportunity to photograph this locomotive(Hansen No 120) Best time is early morning(coffee time) as the sun is in just the right place, also there is usually some shunting activity about then..27 june 2007.. 3456x2304 Hanson120whatley270607.jpg |
